Young adults living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) make over 300 decisions each day related to food, activity, and insulin – equal to about one decision every five minutes of the day. As a result of these daily care needs, many young adults living with T1D also live with mental health challenges, including diabetes distress. While technological solutions like monitors and pumps have been developed to address some of these demands, paradoxically, this technology has been found to lead to burnout and disengagement from care. In this mixed methods project, Carly will explore how existing technology may be used to enhance connectedness between young adults with T1D, healthcare providers, and caring peer support communities. This will include exploring the impact of a program co-created by young adults with lived experience of T1D called Technology-Enabled Collaborative Care for T1D and Diabetes Distress (TECC-T1D3) on mental health outcomes and compassionate care.
