Developing a framework for equitable ML development and deployment in oncology

Mattea Welch

MSc. PhD

Award: 2024 Compassion and Artificial Intelligence Fellowship

Themes:
  • AI development framework
  • Equitable care
  • Oncology

The next healthcare era hinges on artificial intelligence (AI) advancements, leveraging vast clinical, imaging and operational data to streamline and augment processes. However, the data that is used to train AI solutions is biased due to the inequities that characterize our society (e.g. the social determinants of health), and health and healthcare in particular. Therefore, there is a risk that AI will exacerbate health inequity by recapitulating and magnifying biases in healthcare data, thereby undermining clinicians’ ability to provide compassionate care.

Mattea’s study will develop an AI framework that defines best practices and recommendations to safeguard patients and care-providers from biased and inequitable AI predictions. She will demonstrate the impact of our framework through a Bias Mitigation and Compassionate Care challenge that invites researchers to leverage and explore the framework’s usability.
