Dr. Shelly McKellar
Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine at Western University
Professor Shelley McKellar was appointed to the Hannah Chair in 2012 and her teaching is directly related to her research interests. She studies the history of medicine and disease, with a special interest in the history of medical technology, instruments and devices, the history of surgery and medical biography. Already the author of two monographs she is presently completing a manuscript on the history of the development and use of artificial hearts from the 1950s to present day.
Along with teaching medical students in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and non-medical students in the Faculty of Social Science, McKellar offers courses in disease and material culture in the Department of History. She also curates the university’s Medical Artifact Collection.
