Dr. Edward Shorter
Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine at UofT
In 1991, Edward Shorter was appointed the Jason A. Hannah Professor of the History of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. With numerous publications to his credit, Shorter is internationally recognized as a pre-eminent historian of psychiatry.
In 2013 he documented the rise of the Faculty of Medicine at U of T in his monograph Partnership for Excellence: Medicine at the University of Toronto and Academic Hospitals (University of Toronto Press). In addition to his many research initiatives in medicine and healthcare, Ned is widely sought after as a lecturer, guest speaker, and expert in his field.
Edward (Ned) works with undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of History’s History of Medicine Program, as well as guiding, together with administrator Susan Belanger, the online “Living History” archive of the Faculty of Medicine. He also offers electives in Undergraduate Medical Education and the Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine.
