Venous thromboembolism, also known as blood clots, are a common and potentially deadly complication of cancer and its treatment. New pills, called direct oral anticoagulants, can prevent blood clots, but they come with a risk of bleeding. Currently there is limited ability to predict who benefits from these pills for prevention. Robert plans to apply state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to routinely collected data in the electronic health record to test a system, CREST, that predicts blood clots among cancer treatment to guide prevention. He will engage patients and other stakeholders to ensure that CREST improves outcomes compassionately and equitably once implemented in clinical care.
