700+ registered for first-of-its-kind virtual nursing symposium
October 30, 2020
On Wednesday, 21 October 2020, AMS Healthcare and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) held a first-ever online symposium. Titled Nursing and Compassionate Care in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, it attracted a huge pan-Canadian audience made up of nurses (in all roles), other health professionals, educators, health service administrators, researchers, policy makers, technology experts, and media professionals.
It’s clear that this is an important topic for the nursing profession. A new era in healthcare and nursing has begun, and COVID-19 has accelerated the adoption of virtual care delivery models. Nurses need and want information about the potential impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on patients, families, and caregivers. The symposium provided an opportunity for everyone to discuss how they might influence the development, deployment, and evaluation of these technologies.
Before the symposium, AMS and RNAO released Nursing and Compassionate Care in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Engaging the Emerging Future (see below). It outlines 15 recommendations to prepare nurses and nursing students to use artificially intelligent health technologies (AIHTs) to augment the patient experience while ensuring the delivery of quality, person-centred, and compassionate nursing care.
